SATAM is coming back to TV!!!

Satam is coming to UPN 9, the local upn station for the new york city metro area. This email someone got back from news anchor Brenda Blackman confirms it.

Dear sonicjma,

UPN 9 has always brought quality television to viewers in the tri-state area and look to continue doing this. For nearly ten years, UPN 9 has been the leader in children's television programming and will be adding more shows this summer to the weekday morning "DiC" line-up. "Sonic The Hedgehog" will be added to the block starting in mid-May and will be the front part of a Sonic hour followed by "Sonic Underground". Also, UPN 9 will continue to show "Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century" and "Stargate Infinity". We are looking foward to bringing back a timeless American cartoon classic and hope that UPN 9 will continue to entertain in the years to come.

Yours truly,
Brenda Blackman

Origin of Tails

It has never ceased to surprise me of how many artists, poets, and authors have drawn inspiration from the many mythologies of cultures around the world. Many contemporary novels, video games, movies, or basically any form of entertainment have the roots of their characters and/or storyline steeped in the myths of long ago. Mythology often accompanies the stories of mythical creatures that have fascinated us for centuries and still do today. There is something about a dragon taking flight or a troll under a bridge or even worlds beyond our own that sparks a flare of imagination within all of us. Sega has used this flare of inspiration to bring us one of the favorite hero/sidekick in video games; Miles “Tails” Prowler.

It is quite possible that Tails had been inspired from the old tales of kitsunes. Kitsunes, probably known as keatons by Zelda gamers, is a fox spirit whose stories originated in India and then spread to Korea, China, and Japan. The kitsunes quickly became entwined in the Japanese lore as a kami, a spirit that could influence the life of honorable men, and control the lives of the dishonorable.

The kitsune had the powers of illusion, possession (they are spirits), creating folds in time and space, the ability to create foxfire, powers of shapeshifting, the powers of seduction by hypnosis with their waving tail(s) and the ability to take physical form in the world. In Japanese lore it was very difficult for a kitsune to take on a physical form because of the immense energy required to bridge the spirit and mortal worlds. Thus an offering was usually offered to give the kitsune strength. Usually kitsune preferred possession because it is much easier.

Whether by physical manifestation or possession, the kitsune was then on the earth and had to draw energy from a land that was similar to the elemental type of kitsune it was in order to stay healthy. There were thirteen different types of kitsune; celestial (heaven, prime) void (dark), wind, spirit, fire, earth, thunder, time, sound, mountain, ocean, forest, and river. If the kitsune stayed on earth too long it could run the risk of irreversibly destroying the land.

On the other hand, Tails is not a spirit fox: he is completely mortal. The most noticeable attribute he shared with the kitsunes was his uncommon number of tails. Kitsune were known for having anywhere from one to nine tails with each tail as a symbol of the kitsune’s knowledge, wisdom, age, and power. The more tails a kitsune has, the more powerful and knowledgeable the kitsune is.

Tails shares more than just a physical attribute with kitsunes, many of kitsunes’ behavioral are very similar to Tails’ own behavior. They both tend to have values set in stone, have a critical eye for spotting weaknesses, both are very emotional and vengeful, and both hate being captured or bound. If kitsunes saw an immoral person (ex: Robotnik) they would stop at nothing until he was taken down. Tails, like the kitsune, can be very vengeful, and this was seen when he thought Eggman had killed Sonic aboard the ark in Sonic Adventure 2. Tails had nearly killed the doctor in the fight that followed.

Kitsunes were also predominately female, but even the males showed feminine characteristics, and could easily be mistaken for a female. Tails, following this trend, was originally a female character when Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released in Japan. Americans, not wanting their mascot Sonic to appear ‘indecent’, had revamped the storyline and created the male sidekick version of Tails. In the beginning, Tails was indeed a girl, and the change from feminity to masculinity is symbolized with the tuff of fur at his chest.

There are more similarities than meet the eye when it comes to Tails and the kitsunes. Tails was not only inspired from mythology, but he is the very personification of a non-magical mortal kitsune. Besides the tails, Miles still acts and behaves in both the video games and the cartoons in a fashion similar to that of kitsune. It could easily be said that Miles Prowler is indeed a modern kitsune.

Sonic Fandom Sinking into Stupidity...

What follows is a letter from the Archie Comics letters page of issue 132 of Sonic the Hedgehog. I assure you that nothing has been edited or altered from the books text...Dear Sonic Crew,I would love it if you added Omega (appears in Sonic Heroes coming in 2004), Cream, Chocolate and Cheese, E102 Gamma, E101 Beta, Big and the Cat and Chaos Zero. And leave Sally, Rotor, Bunnie and Antoine out for a while cause they're not in and Sonic games cause they're not real guys and make a special issue and do what I said if you want more fans cause people love Cream and her chaos and the robots (just a suggestion). I haven't been a fan of the comic for long cause I only found out about your comic in July. And the art is amazing go Spaz and thank you Joe Pep for the letters page. Best wishes Sonic I'm a big fan of Sonic the Hedgehog and I'm becoming a fan of your comic. And I loved #125 you did the Shadow story it rocked my world SHADOW ROCKS! And I loved it when Rouge saved Corbin from Dr. Eggman controlling the limos via remote that rocked keep it up Sonic crew your comics are cool they should have more characters that come from SEGA games not made up. I'm totally disagreeing with the idea with no new characters and agreeing with adding Cream, May Sonic have cool advnetures and Eggman lost.Brook HoopingarnerAustin, TX U.S.A.Read this again if you're not mad enough already. I felt the need to share this because it maks a low point in Sonic history. Anyone who claims to be a fan and dosen't know of SatAM should be tied to a tree and shot. I found this letter very upsetting as a Sonic fan, and I hope that by getting the word out we can prevent such ignorance in the future.

Blurring the borders between reality and our blue hero

A touching story of how a mother created the story of Sonic the Hedgehog in
 the 1940's in America.

A story in the Sonic the Hedgehog section of fanfiction.net made my heart
drift through the clouds last night, as I sifted through the author's notes.
 The Sonic Wind
 by Cookerini
would seem, at first glance, to be a confusing and non-sonic related story.
It opens in the windswept plains of California, following a human charachter through
seemingly un-related events. Intertwined into the story is the historical figure,
Chuck Yeager (the first pilot who broke the sound barrier) and the events/persons
 surrounding him at that point.
So what would that have to do with Sonic, you ask? Well, if you'll forgive
me spoiling a little of the details you'll discover as you read this story,
I'll give you the paragraph that sent my imagination flying:

"Mary Garnet was a popular writer of children's books in the U.S. during the 1940's. Her Husband was a test pilot for the U.S. Air Force. His secret project was code named "Blue Gale" who's goal was to produce the first plane that would break the sound barrier. Mary affectionately nick-named her husband "Hedgehog" because of the way his hair always struck straight up when he took off his flight helmet..."

And the second detail will surely give you reason to wonder. The very seeds
of the Sonic legend are ingrained into Cookerini's fanciful story. As you read, it becomes difficult to discern between actual history and Sonic myth. Once again, a quote from the Appendicies
 of 'The Sonic Wind':

Later, as she developed the pictures in the camera of the last moments of the Air Show, Meg's heart stopped as the last exposure came into view. It showed the blurred image of a large pair of red shoes with a white stripe...
I cannot go further into this article, because I would do you no justice by re-telling
the tale which has been so carefully laid out for you in The
Sonic Wind.

Working with themes

Well, I'm slowly getting things in place. I still have to integrate the Oekaki and Fanfiction sections into this main site, but that will come.
Right now I am playing with themes for this front site, so you all can see your pages the 'proper' way.

Hang in there. ;3
